The national tasting competition evaluates commercial cider products using defined style guidelines and independent judging standards. These categories are adopted by Cider Canada and apply across the various competitions.

Traditional & Tannin-Forward Ciders
Recognizes cider rooted in traditional apple varieties and heritage production styles, typically emphasizing structure, tannin, and orchard expression.
Contemporary & Sessionable Ciders
Celebrates clean, balanced, and approachable cider styles designed for broader market appeal, including dry, semi-dry, and lightly sweet expressions.
Includes cider made with additional fruit, botanicals, spices, or pear (perry). Judges evaluate balance, integration, and expression of added ingredients.
Recognizes ice cider, fortified cider, and higher-alcohol specialty styles showcasing concentration, complexity, and technical craftsmanship.
Honours innovative ciders aged in wood or created using specialty production techniques that elevate depth, structure, and uniqueness.
These awards recognize excellence beyond the glass — highlighting leadership, sustainability, advocacy, marketing, and sector development.
